Indecisive Michigan Avenue Morning
    by Kim Holzer    author info

I stroll around here unfashionably aloof
rolling out of bed with no thought to hair
or makeup
or toenail polish
even though the path to my office
is Michigan Avenue--
The street worn down by professionals
who brush, floss, curl, crimp and spa before coming to work.
I've merely showered.
On any other street,
it's enough.

Then I saw a guy in way worse shape than me
On his way to a job that is probably a lot like mine--
Respectable.
Probably more respectable than he is.
In his left hand was a large cup of coffee
about like the one I was holding.
He raised it to his lips
like necessary stuff.

In his right hand,
he held a goblet of red wine
and wore
a dumb look on his face
like he truly didn't know what to drink first.
And I felt bad for the guy
All respectable in his khaki pants
haircut
clean shave and well-soled shoes.
But as I got to my tower
I started to feel a lot worse
For his coworkers.

I work with a lot of drunks.
They find ways of making it.
But the indecisive guys--
They don't last long.
